Education is one of the three main programmes of the Blue World Institute. Education programmes are developed to make the results of scientific research accessible to the general public and contribute to the better understanding of marine mammal’s biology and ecology and the marine ecosystem in general.

Education activities of the Adriatic Dolphin Project were originally initiated in 1987 and developed cooperation with the local NGO “Green in Blue”. President of “Green and Blue”, Mrs. Nena Nosalj-Peršić organized the first Dolphin Day in Veli Lošinj in August 1993. That was a start of a long and ongoing tradition of Dolphin Day in Veli Lošinj.

The founding of the Blue World Institute in 1999 developed three new programmes of the Adriatic Dolphin Project  – research, education and conservation. Education activities became more developed in the period of 2000 - 2003 with members of Blue World regularly visiting schools, kindergartens, children camps and hotels giving numerous lectures. In addition the tradition of Dolphin Day on the first Saturday in August became bigger and more diverse with an expanding programme of lectures, workshops, games, projections, exhibitions, sport competitions and concerts.

As a result on the 2nd of August 2003 the central event of 11th Dolphin Day was the opening of the Lošinj Marine Education Centre as the first centre of its kind on the Croatian coast. The education activities of Blue World have since taken place in the Centre which is open throughout the year.
The main project “Education program for school groups” started in 2004 and 2005 it has now been recognized and certified by National Agency for Teacher Training and Education. Throughout all this period the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sport financially supported the education programme for schools so that a great number of lectures and workshops where done free of charge for Croatian school children.

The number of individuals visiting the Lošinj Marine Education Centre increases every year which is the best confirmation and support for our work. We are especially pleased to see groups of users that return every year to participate in our programme. For us, that is the biggest motivation to continue with development of new activities.

Besides the exhibited contents in the centre we organize educational programmes such as lectures, workshops and specialized one or multi-day educational activities for children and adults. For more information check our school programme and specialised programme web pages.
